Title of project

"Cheating in Online Examinations Among University Students"

Justification of the topic chosen

1)    Why it is important to know the issue and give solution to the current situation above?

As we all know, cheating is a bad culture that we should always refrain from. Especially, during the outbreak of pandemic Covid-19, all of the students are encouraged to carry out online distance learning (ODL) as it guarantees both students' health and makes sure that their academic progress will not be abandoned. However, there was some news recently regarding the undergraduates in university Malaysia are involved in the case of cheating using searching engine during the online exam. This reveals that most of the undergraduates failed to show their integrity and honesty. So, in order to prevent this from happening in the future, it is very vital to give more information concerning the impacts of cheating for the undergraduates who are involved in cheating during the online examination.

2)    What is the implication if these issues never solve probably?

Nowadays, each student has more incentives to cheat because if they believe that the rest of the group is cheating, then they must demonstrate better than at least average class performance in order to pass the class. Thus, a student's chance to pass the class without cheating would be very slim. Of course, in this case, the cost of cheating goes down because the alternative is not cheating is failing the class. If universities decide to implement online exams with no proctoring in the upcoming semesters, we expect that there will be widespread cheating among students, who will not be penalized since it is almost impossible to present definitive evidence of cheating in an online exam. Besides, the quality of graduates will be reduced year by year and they will have low ability to contribute themselves in the workplace in the future. The undergraduates that involved in cheating will always bring shame on them and their family.

3)    Are there any similar cases happen in our surrounding in order to provide statistical data or credible reports to support our issues?

Yes, we found that there are similar cheating cases happen in our surroundings and even the university authorities have to take actions to handle this issue. There are some pieces of evidence (REFER TO evidence in Phase 1 Step 3 – Gathering of Information part) that shows us how serious these issues are because it is related to the basic integrity of undergraduates which take place in University Malaysia Pahang (UMP), University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), etc. Integrity and honesty are positive traits that every student should possess whenever and wherever they are. Therefore, we have to think rationally about these issues and come out with a more effective solution to prevent this issue from happening.
